Motherhood Is A Lot (the truth about being mommy)

Posted on August 4, 2014 by Jess Connell

Motherhood Is a LOT (the truth about being mommy)Want the truth about being “Mommy?”

Motherhood is a LOT…

  • a lot of snuggles
  • a lot of example-setting
  • a lot of comforting hurts
  • a lot of analyzing problems
  • a lot of correcting
  • a lot of smiles
  • a lot of sorting-out priorities
  • a lot of seeking wise counsel
  • a lot of spankings
  • a lot of back rubbing
  • a lot of exhaustion
  • a lot of setting aside present demands for the needs of others
  • a lot of talking
  • a lot of listening
  • a lot of training
  • a lot of repeating the same thing dozens of times
  • a lot of wondering when things you’ve repeated and trained will “stick”
  • a lot of menial tasks
  • a lot of body change
  • a lot of “you look really pretty, mama”s
  • a lot of hugs and kisses and zurburts and tickles
  • a lot of hand-picked wildflower & dandelion bouquets
  • a lot of wonder while watching needy babies explode into little people
  • a lot of giggling together
  • a lot of disappointment
  • a lot of cooking
  • a lot of “you’re the best cook ever, mama”s
  • a lot of very hard work
  • a lot of nights with weary feet
  • a lot of nights with hot baths
  • a lot of careful planning
  • a lot of joy as you see your plans and hard work bless the people you love
  • a lot of learning to rightly prioritize your own needs amidst the needs of others (some of us have the tendency to be too selfish, others have the tendency to be too self-giving without ever ranking their own emotional & mental health into the mix of household needs)
  • a lot of lifestyle change
  • a lot of adjustment and growth
  • a LOT of prayer
  • TOTALLY worth it.

What would you add to the list?

Thanks, Ruth, for piping up. Motherhood is always a work of God’s refinement in our lives– while the fundamentals stay the same, the context and delivery may change over time. I love it; what a tool motherhood is in the hand of God to chisel away the ugliness from us, bit by bit.

Excellent list. I was interested – a lot of disappointment? Yours? The childrens’? I’m just interested. It is such a balance isn’t it – putting the needs of others first, but also realising that you are human and need food/ rest/ visits to the doctor etc too.

    A lot of activity
A lot of creativity that I did not know I had
    A lot of adventure stories
A lot of toenails to cut
A lot of prayer for patience and wisdom

RE: Disappointment- I was thinking everything from seeing your up-til-now sweet 2-year-old bite or hit another child to the (right) disappointments we must cause in the lives of our children (“no you can’t do x/y/z”) to the disappointments we feel when our older children sin, choose poorly, experience hurts, etc.

Big and small. More people to love= more disappointments cause we’re all sinners & the world is fallen.

And YES (!!!) to the toenails– good grief! Line em up. 🙂
